Greatest Movie Villains: Vigo the Carpathian from "Ghostbusters II"

Ok, I swear I'm not a racist... but are you at all surprised to see a Carpathian here? Also known as Vigo the Cruel, Vigo the Torturer, Vigo the Despised, and Vigo the Unholy, this Nordic desperado kept things interesting in 16th century Moldavia. Eventually, the oppressed people tired of Vigo's stern leadership and he was poisoned, stabbed, shot, hung, stretched, disemboweled, and drawn and quartered. Not a bad way to go.

After gaining strength through the bad vibes of New York City, Vigo attemped to gain earthly form through an infant. Although this makes very little sense, it was nonetheless quite an evil plan. Vigo was poised to defeat the Ghostbusters and begin his second reign of terror, but he was foiled when the goodwill of New Yorkers positively charged slime, which caused the Statue of Liberty to gain mobility, amble down 5th avenue, and attack the Manhattan Museum of Art with its torch, banishing Vigo forever and restoring the balance of good and evil. There are days and there are days.

I swear he's not on this list just because he's a Carpathian. Seriously, some of my best friends are Carpathians.

Greatest Movie Villains: Bennett from "Commando"

One could make the case that Bennett's physical presence is not intimidating in the slightest: a pudgy, 40ish Aussie who looks like he just got back from Fire Island, with his chain mail skirt, cut-off sleeves, fuck-me boots, and push-broom mustache.

It almost seems silly that this is the "ultimate bad guy" who must have a showdown with a 1985 Arnold Schwarzenegger at the peak of his physical prowess. It just adds insult to injury that Arnie has a great name in the movie: John Matrix (which is in the running for Best Name Ever). Bennett, on the other hand, doesn't even get a cool first name like "Xavier", "Ace", "Damian", or "Bones".

It's a shame Bennett had to die, but I think he went out the way he would have wanted: beat to a pulp by his arch-enemy John Matrix and then impaled through the chest with a giant pipe. If only we all could be so lucky. Bennett, you are officially one of the Greatest Movie Villains.

Greatest Movie Villains: Humongous from "The Road Warrior"

The audacity to wear nothing but a loincloth and hockey mask speaks volumes about Humongous' self-confidence and poise. A true Renaissance Man, Humongous' varied interests included raping/murdering and murdering/raping. His name literally meant "extraordinarily large" and he was a man of great passions. Sure, he might have strapped innocent victims in front of cars and motorcycles to act as human shields, but he was an articulate, cultured individual. As leader of a vicious mob of mohawked degenerates, Humongous showcased his ability to lead and his managerial skills.

"The Road Warrior" is also notable for featuring some of Mel Gibson's finest acting as he shows great screen presence, charisma, and restraint of his rabid anti-Semitism.

Although not a racist, Humongous is nonetheless one of the Greatest Movie Villains.

Greatest Movie Villains: Harry and Marv from "Home Alone"

These two guys just couldn't catch a break. The Wet Bandits (AKA The Sticky Bandits) terrorized the suburbs of Chicago for years before their nefarious plans were derailed by a kid with humorous booby traps. I'm sure they enjoyed telling their fellow inmates "how they got put in da slamma'."

But that doesn't change the fact that these are some evil guys. Remember at the beginning of "Home Alone" when Harry cases the McAlister household by dressing up as a policeman? What the film doesn't show is how Harry got that uniform... That's right Harry and Marv from "Home Alone" are cop killers!

Also arrested for trespassing, burglary, escaping from a federal penitentiary, and attempted murder of a child, The Wet Bandits are truly two of the Greatest Movie Villains.

Greatest Movie Villains: Maynard from "Pulp Fiction"

This is one evil guy. This is the kind of guy who gives Creepy Southern Murderous Pawn Shop Store Owning Rapists a bad name. Plus, I don't think any character has ever said the line "the spider just caught a couple flies..." and then ended up being a good guy. Maynard gets bonus points for keeping a leather-clad sex slave in a box in his store's basement.

The Gimp was a profound, conflicted man and one of the world's brightest lights. He will be missed dearly.

It's also quite perverse how Maynard just watches his companion Zed rape Marcellus Wallace. Maynard doesn't get involved. He just stands in the back sweating and whispering encouragement like "Get that ass." Is Maynard not interested in participating? Did Zed call "all-time rapist" or something?

Slashed and stabbed with a samurai sword by Bruce Willis, Maynard went up to that big pawn shop in the sky. He lived his life with no regrets and he died like the dashing rogue that he was.

Maynard from "Pulp Fiction", you are one of the Greatest Movie Villains.

Greatest Movie Villains: Introduction

Many of them have been overlooked in the past. Many of them hide behind masks or hideous facial disfigurements, seldom showing their motives and ambitions. Many of them have been restricted to three lines of dialogue or less, due to inept writing and acting, piss-poor production values, and, very often, the actor's unfamiliarity with the English language.

But there is no doubt: The characters included in this running segment are the most terrifying, despicable baddies in cinematic history.
